Gears 6 Is The Coalition’s Next Game, Non-Gears Project Canceled – Report

The Coalition has reportedly canceled two games–one a smaller non-Gears of War game, and a second mystery game. The studio’s next game will reportedly be Gears 6.

According to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, the Matrix demo that The Coalition worked on with Epic Games is not the smaller project. “That was a separate thing. But it does seem like they feel like, ‘well, we are up to speed because we worked on that,’ and so they have canceled that smaller project as well as another project,” Grubb explains.

He continues, “This was all reflected in the layoffs that happened at Microsoft which did hit The Coalition a little bit. But the studio is now going to move on fully to Gears 6.” Microsoft laid off 10,000 people last month, impacting 343 Industries, Bethesda, The Coalition, and other Xbox teams.

The two most recent games in the Gears of War franchise are Gears Tactics, Gears Pop and Gears 5. Gears Pop was a Clash Royale-type mobile game that first launched in 2019. However, it was shut down back in April 2021. Gears Tactics was also a launch title for the Xbox Series X|S. There were rumors of a Gears of War remastered collection similar to how the Halo: Master Chief Collection was handled, but nothing has been confirmed so far.

In GameSpot’s Gears 5 review, we said, “Gears 5 is very much a return of those best elements of Gears of War, but with a focus on making the game feel somewhat more adaptive to your particular ways of playing. Whether you want campaign or co-op, Competitive or Quickplay, there’s an option for you in Gears 5, and plenty of stuff to reward you for time spent and skill gained.”
