Zoe Saldaña Is Done With Gamora, But She Doesn’t Think Marvel Is

Between the Avatar sequels, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Star Trek, Zoe Saldaña doesn’t have a shortage of movie franchises. Saldaña still has three more Avatar movies to go, and plans for Star Trek 4 with the cast of the 2009 reboot films were recently revitalized when Paramount signed Andor’s Toby Haynes to direct the next sequel. However, Saldaña has repeatedly stated that she’s done playing Gamora after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But she still wants to see more adventures with Gamora and the Guardians in the MCU. Via Variety, Saldaña appeared in an upcoming episode of The Playlist’s Discourse podcast where she addressed her hopes for Gamora’s future.

“I mean, so far, I think that she is [gone for good] for me, but I don’t think Gamora has gone for good,” said Saldaña. “I would think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back the Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s just such a fan-favorite group of misfits, you know? And then at the helm, they had a voice like James Gunn’s writing–which is just so marvelous for and very specific for this genre. And it’s so great for this genre as well. So, I would be the first one in the first row to sort of celebrate when the Guardians of the Galaxy come back.”

Saldaña hasn’t appeared as Nyota Uhura since Star Trek Beyond in 2016. The initial plans for Star Trek 4 would have brought back Chris Hemsworth’s George Kirk opposite Chris Pine’s Captain James T. Kirk for a father-and-son time travel adventure before that film fell apart long before cameras started rolling. Haynes’ upcoming sequel is based on a different script by Seth Grahame-Smith and it’s described as the final chapter for Saldaña and the rest of the reboot cast. Regardless, the actress remains remains enthusiastic about her potential return to the Star Trek universe.

“I still have hope,” said Saldaña. “I had a wonderful experience through and through and through the three times that I was a part of that team. I know that they’re always trying to sort of aim to wrangle everybody together, but I also know that Paramount is working on a new sort of fresh take on Star Trek, which I think is such a wonderful franchise that should live for a very long time, whether or not us as the original remake cast can come back. I don’t know, but I certainly hope so.”

Star Trek 4 doesn’t currently have a release date. Meanwhile, we don’t know the status of another potential Guardians of the Galaxy adventure now that James Gunn is co-head of DC Studios. However, the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did tease that Star Lord (Chris Pratt) would eventually return.
