Square Enix Intends To Be Aggressive With AI

Square Enix said that it plans to be aggressive in applying AI to both its game development and publishing pipelines.

In Square Enix’s “A New Year’s Letter from the President,” Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu said, “I believe that generative AI has the potential not only to reshape what we create, but also to fundamentally change the processes by which we create, including programming.”

“In the short term, our goal will be to enhance our development productivity and achieve greater sophistication in our marketing efforts,” he continued. “In the longer term, we hope to leverage those technologies to create new forms of content for consumers, as we believe that technological innovation represents business opportunities.”

AI has been a hot topic, especially in the games industry. Square Enix isn’t the only company planning on utilizing AI either. Last year, Electronic Arts came out to explain why AI would be good for gaming, and Xbox’s Phil Spencer said that AI would be a positive, additive force for gaming too.

However, developers are concerned that AI could impact their jobs in the future, as well as AI programs taking other artists’ work without their consent.

This isn’t the first time Square Enix has tried to hop on trending technologies. In 2022’s New Years letter from then president Yosuke Matsuda, he explained how Square Enix would implement blockchain technology and NFTs.
