Circana, the research company formerly known as NPD, has released its report for June 2023 video game sales in the US, and Diablo IV and the PlayStation 5 dominated the charts.

Diablo IV was the best-selling game of June and immediately became the No. 3 best-selling game of 2023 so far, trailing only The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Hogwarts Legacy. Diablo IV crossed a devilish $666 million in sales after just five days. It is Blizzard’s fastest selling game ever. Blizzard has not, however, announced a specific sales number for Diablo IV as of yet.

Some of June’s other new releases landed in the top 20 for the month, including Final Fantasy XVI (No. 2), Street Fighter 6 (No. 3), F1 2023 (No. 15), and Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life (No. 17). For Street Fighter 6 specifically, its launch-month sales were more than double those of Street Fighter V in February 2016.

For mobile games, the top 10 titles in the US during June based on spending were Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Royal Match, Coin Master, Monopoly Go, Gardenscapes, Township, Pokemon Go, Jackpot Party – Casino Slots, and Homescapes.

Total spending on games in the US rose by 7% year-over-year, reaching $4.1 billion. Console and PC sales specifically for June 2023 rocketed up by more than 50% compared to last year. For the first half of 2023, total spending on games was flat, at $22.8 billion. Console spending increased by 8% for the first half of 2023 and non-mobile subscription revenue rose slightly, but not enough to offset declines in mobile, PC, cloud, and non-console VR markets.

Switching to hardware, the PS5 reigned supreme. It was the best-selling console of June 2023 in the US for both unit and dollar sales. Spending on PlayStation hardware was the highest ever for a June month since June 2008, while unit sales of PlayStation systems in June 2023 were the highest since June 2010. Unsurprisingly, the PS5 continues to be 2023’s best-selling console for units and dollars.

Total spending on hardware in June 2023 rose by 22%, landing at $454 million, marking the highest hardware spending for a June month since June 2008 ($617 million). The PS5 enjoyed double-digit percentage growth in June 2023, while the Xbox Series X|S and Switch platforms saw declines.

For the year to date, spending on hardware in the US was 23% higher than the same period in 2022, reaching $2.6 billion.

Spending on accessories, meanwhile, rose by 14% in June 2023, reaching $214 million. The top-sellers during the month included PS5 DualSense controllers, with the DualSense Edge leading the way for dollar sales.

Total spending on games, hardware, and accessories in June 2023 totaled $4.7 billion in the US, up 9%. June 2023 marked the second-highest spending ever recorded in the US during a June month, only behind June 2021’s $4.8 billion that was fueled in part by the pandemic and stay-at-home guidance. For the first half of 2023, total spending on all segments of the gaming market in the US was $26.6 billion, which was up 2%.
