As part of HBO’s big media event on Thursday, the company announced that The Last of Us Season 2 will begin production in early 2024. According to Variety, studio boss Casey Bloys confirmed this and noted that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes led to a delay in the production of Season 2.

The WGA strike is over, but the SAG-AFTRA strike remains ongoing. While early 2024 is the targeted start date for filming on Season 2, that isn’t 100% confirmed as of yet and will depend on what happens with the actors’ strike.

As for when The Last of Us Season 2 might debut, it’s not expected to arrive until 2025 at the soonest. HBO also confirmed during the event that House of the Dragon Season 2 will debut in early Summer 2024 and that another Game of Thrones spin-off will begin production in 2024.

The Last of Us, which is based on the Naughty Dog game series, debuted in January 2023 and became a quick success. It didn’t take long for HBO to greenlight a second season.

The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Season 2 will introduce the character Abby, who has already been cast. Abby is a central character in The Last of Us: Part II, and a controversial one, given what happens in the story and her involvement in it.

As for the game series, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us multiplayer game has been put “on ice,” according to a report. Naughty Dog has also talked about the possibility of making The Last of Us: Part III, but the game has not yet been announced.
