If you found Nicolas Cage as Superman fighting a giant spider surprising in The Flash, you weren’t alone. The actor himself also didn’t expect to see that, because “that was not what I did,” he said.
Speaking with Yahoo, Cage opened up about his Flash cameo and even touched upon AI in Hollywood. For starters, he explained that he was on set for the DC film for a few hours at most. While there, “what I was supposed to do was literally just be standing in an alternate dimension, if you will, and witnessing the destruction of the universe,” Cage said. “Kal-El was bearing witness [to] the end of a universe, and you can imagine with that short amount of time that I had, what that would mean in terms of what I can convey.”
The whole idea riffs on the canceled Superman Lives project from the 1990s, which would have starred Cage. Batman director Tim Burton was going to helm the movie. But instead, The Flash sees Cage’s Superman being much more active, flying around to combat a giant arthropod.
“When I went to the picture, it was me fighting a giant spider,” Cage said. “I did not do that. That was not what I did. I don’t think it was [created by] AI. …It was CGI, OK, so that they could de-age me, and I’m fighting a spider. I didn’t do any of that, so I don’t know what happened there.”
This led to Cage ripping into AI for movies, saying it’s “a nightmare to me. It’s inhumane. You can’t get more inhumane than artificial intelligence.”
Cage is currently promoting Dream Scenario, in which everyone is having sleeping fantasies about his character named Paul Matthews. The movie is slated to premiere November 10 in select theaters, with a wider release on November 22. Meanwhile, The Flash is available to stream on Max.
