Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Blu-Ray Release Includes Raw Cut Without Special Effects

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is swinging onto Blu-ray on August 27, and in case you missed its theatrical run, this home release will show you just how apes have adjusted after becoming the dominant species of the planet. Multiple editions of the film are up for preorder now, including a fancy 4K Blu-ray paired with a steelbook case for $35 at Walmart. Amazon currently has the steelbook edition for $66, but this will change soon–Walmart previously had it listed for $66, too. If your grandparents are interested in watching, a DVD version is available to preorder.

The 4K Blu-ray includes not only the theatrical edition of the film, but also its “Raw” version. Like previous Planet of the Apes films, Kingdom made extensive use of special effects and painted these visuals over the actors who portrayed the various apes through motion-capture. This second cut strips all of those visual effects away, leaving only the actors behind in their mocap suits. Is it going to be weird to see this version? Absoultely, but it’s going to be interesting to see what a big-budget film looks like before all of that post-production work is added.

Outside of Walmart’s $35 price for the steelbook edition, the prices shown above are unlikely to hold firm until launch. You won’t be charged until your order ships, and most Blu-ray releases receive solid discounts prior to release.

Set several generations after the previous film, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes follows Noa, a young ape who survives an attack on his village by the ruthless Proximus Caeser. After crossing paths with Mae, a human woman who has retained the ability to speak after the virus introduced in Rise of the Planet of the Apes turned human survivors into feral people, Noa undertakes a harrowing journey to discover the truth of the world and forge a new future for both apes and humans.

If you’d like to catch up on the previous film trilogy, a 4K UHD box set is available for $33.75 (was $50) at Amazon. This includes Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes, a trilogy of movies focused on a genetically evolved chimpanzee named Caesar (played by Andy Serkis) and the fall of humanity after a devastating virus wipes out most of the species. Planet of the Apes films! Together! Strong!
