Electronic Arts and Nike have formed a new partnership, which will see “virtual creations” from Nike’s Swoosh Web3 platform added to several future EA Sports games. Although the specific acronym isn’t used in the announcement, nor are any games specified, it sounds as if Nike’s Swoosh NFTs will be incorporated into them.
According to Nike, select Swoosh virtual creations will be made available and will allow members to develop “new opportunities for self-expression and creativity through sport and style,” although NFTs weren’t specifically mentioned. Nike added that more details will be revealed in the coming months. Nike’s tie-in tweet had images of football gear–both American and global–possibly hinting at Swoosh integration for the upcoming soccer game EA Sports FC and Madden NFL.
One possible item revealed in the tweet was a unique football helmet, which has a carbon black finish, a purple lens, and a Nike logo on the side, complete with proof-of-ownership stats and purchase date.
“All of us at EA Sports are focused on leading the next evolution in sports fandom, and this new collaboration with our longtime partners at Nike sits directly at the intersection of innovation, sport, and culture,” said EA Sports senior VP Andrea Hopelain.
This isn’t the first time that video games have experimented with digital goods, as in one infamous example, Ubisoft offered helmets with tiny numbers on them to Ghost Recon: Breakpoint players through its Ubisoft Quartz NFT initiative. The NFT market has also shrunk dramatically since its boom in early 2021, as so far, their proposed value has yet to materialize within games.
